When
Saturday, May 9th, 2026
12pm – 2:30pm (Please arrive 20 min early to account for finding parking).
2129 Vallejo Street. SF, CA 94115
How it works: After performances and demonstrations we break out into 6-8 rodas (circles for playing capoeira) so everyone can play lots of capoeira! The kids take turns playing with each other, adult leaders, and capoeira mestres within our group and close-knit community. After lots of singing and playing the capoeira stops and students receive their certificate or belt followed by group photos and goodbyes. That’s it…no pressure! Just lots of fun and capoeira!
VERY IMPORTANT NOTES!
1. All-white uniforms are mandatory for participation.
2. Shirts will be handed out on the day of the event.
3. Order your capoeira pants asap just in case any issues or inconveniences arise. (SEE NOTE #4).

Glossary of terms
“Capoeira is an African Brazilian art form, developed by African slaves in Brazil about 400 years ago. Capoeira is a self-defense disguised as a dance because slaves needed to hide it from their slave masters. The combination of body movements, trickery, music, and songs make it not just a martial art, but also a ritualized way of combat. Two capoeiristas (capoeira players) must follow the traditions and rules of the art. They must play capoeira, not fight. “
—Samoel Domingos, Mestre Urubu Malandro, Capoeira Ijexa
“Troca de cordões” translates to “changing of cords,” meaning the student’s promotion to their next belt.
