- Black Dance & Expression
Capoeira performances include music demonstrations of berimbau instrument (percussive West African instrument) along with other African traditional dances. Films produced by Jarrel Phillips highlighting dance and expression within African Diaspora + Discussion to follow for closing *Performers would include youth as well.
- Souls of Black Folk: Juneteenth and SF
For educators and history enthusiasts!
Mixed- media presentation: Film, photography and oral history. Litt Young, Phillips’s great-great grandfather, was a slave on the plantation where the Battle of Vicksburg happened. Learn more of his story as it relates to Juneteenth, the Emancipation and more. Presentation also examines the current, local Black community’s presence, contributions and issues within Sf. Discussion to follow media presentation, including short films produced by Phillips.

The importance of education through a sociological perspective on play, performance, and the arts! Follow-up discussion about the significance of arts in community education. Presentation includes 2 short films produced by Phillips:
Cayuga: Underground Circus short series – learn about a once thriving SF circus community
Playing Capoeira – youth capoeira practitioners and their experience through the Afro-Brazilian art form.
